The operator is aware of the problem: It is frequently the case with larger gasketed plate heat exchangers which have a large number of plates that the individual plates are subjected to displacement in the frame when in a clamped condition. This is worsened by each opening and closing of the plate heat exchanger which finally results in leakages and mechanical damage being caused to each of the plates.
The cause is to be found in the suspension area of the individual plate which is partially dimensioned too “weakly“. This serves the guiding and fixing of the individual plate in the area of the top and bottom support bars. When damage has occurred here, the displacements increase exponentially each time the plate packet is closed!
In the past, a completely new plate packet was ordered and installed as a replacement, this normally resulting in long delivery times and high procurement costs. In view of the permanently increasing scarcity of raw materials, especially stainless steel and titanium, the prices for spare parts have currently increased drastically and the resulting delivery times can take longer than a year, so that this can result in an escalation as far as the individual case is concerned.
